8th and Last Week

good morning!

i cant believe its the final week in the mtc- its pretty surreal and when i think about being in thailand it still feels super far off, but we got our travel plans this week so stoked on that! we leave monday the 19th at 1:30 pm and take off around like 7 i think. land in LAX for a 5 hour layover then at midnight that night we take off for hong kong, get there a full day later, and finally get to thailand wednesday in the afternoon so itll be a lot of traveling. ill probably be wishing i could be wearing sweat pants or something so thatll probably the the hardest part. stoked on life though its gonna be really fun, and im exciting to be back out in the real world!

The MTC has been so amazing though i cant believe its only been 8 weeks... it has felt like so much longer than that especially when i look back at everything ive learned and done. I lucked out with super chill teachers- i couldnt definitely see hitting them up when i get back, and some will probably have kids too which is weird. Its been really pretty up here and not as cold this week which is good. ill be sending home all my sweaters and jackets and what not momma just a heads up!

we did some fun activities in class this week finishing up getting prepared to get to thailand- super excited to be able to cruise the streets of thailand helping people learn of Christ, its gonna be wayy too much fun!

its funny how every week i feel like im pretty ready for thailand, and for teaching and helping real people, but then after that week i look back at all the things we practiced and learned and think theres no way im ready for thailand! so idk i feel pretty prepared but at the same time im gonna learn so much my first couple weeks there!

had some pretty cool revelation this week in class about teaching and dont really know how to explain it- but how when we teach the gospel, as a missionary my only job is to help them realize the spirit and help them to act for themselves bc conversion almost always comes through what they do AFTER the lesson. and thus in a lesson when we teach, most of what i say should be questions, because even though teaching the material is important its even more important to have the spirit teach the investigator, and that comes through testimony, and having the person being taught think about and respond to inspired questions that will help them grow and realize God in their life- and an investigator knows them-self better than we do- so idk how to explain it but yeah, good stuff.

I think one of my favorite things about being in the MTC is meeting people from literally all over the world its pretty sweet- becoming super close with and elder from sweden, and the phillipines, or japan, a guy from haiti, its just so cool that there are people from all over the world here all for the same reason- pretttty sweet.

I think my favorite moment this week was in class saturday- we were all reading from Alma 26 together- as ammon is returning back from his mission, and he starts going off about the greatness of God and boasts about all the great things that God was able to do and accomplish through him during his mission, and then in verse 26-30ish he starts talking about "the call to discipleship" and all the hardships they endured throughout their time teaching the lamanites, ill just copy past it:

 "26 But behold, my beloved brethren, we came into the wildernes s not with the intent to destroy our brethren, but with the intent that perhaps we might save some few of their souls.
 27 Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord bcomforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with cpatience thinedafflictions, and I will give unto you success.
 28 And now behold, we have come, and been forth amongst them; and we have been patient in our sufferings, and we have suffered every privation; yea, we have traveled from house to house, relying upon the mercies of the world—not upon the mercies of the world alone but upon the mercies of God.
 29 And we have entered into their houses and taught them, and we have taught them in their streets; yea, and we have taught them upon their hills; and we have also entered into their temples and their asynagogues and taught them; and we have been cast out, and mocked, and spit upon, and smote upon our cheeks; and we have been bstoned, and taken and bound with cstrong cords,and cast into prison; and through the power and wisdom of God we have been delivered again.
 30 And we have suffered all manner of afflictions, and all this,that perhaps we might be the means of saving some soul; and we supposed that our ajoy would be full if perhaps we could be the means of saving some."
haha so even though i probably wont get stoned or thrown into prison (hopefully) it was really powerful for some reason when i read this- the joy that comes from sharing the gospel. Even though the endured and suffered all the afflictions, they always remembered to trust in God and remembered there purpose of being out serving and teaching- that they might bring salvation unto even one person. Pretty inspiring missionary scripture, and talking about missionary scriptures ive come to really love 2 Nephi, mosiah, and alma they are just so full of good stuff. Elder Dunnaway compares the scriptures to when he was on debate and whenever he would find a piece of really good or convincing evidence to prove his point how excited he was, and how scriptures i kinda similar in the sense, becuase scriptures are just so powerful in conversion- the word of God just has a way of changing people, weird. haha kidding but yeah i love that book of mormon.

Watched some solid bible videos yesterday on lds.org too and its almost like watching a supper good movie and then wanting to read the book- especially i think it was called "my kingdom is not of this world" and it just helps you visualize what a boss Jesus was, how awesome he was and how much love he had and still has for all of us. i would most definitely suggest watching it- great use of 5 minutes. sooo we had a devotional last night by Elder Heaton i believe and our MTC president had invited Elder Heaton's son with autism, probably about 12 years old named richard, come up and bare his testimony, and that was super powerful. He had his dads phone with what we thought was his whole testimony written on it, but it turned out he just had words like "jesus" and "missionaries" and he bore a super pure and powerful testimony of the savior and the importance he has in his life. Then Elder Heaton's talk had the theme of "minding the gap". Meaning the time in between your lessons with people and investigators- thats the most important time for conversion and growth. It was cool because it was really similar to the things i was thinking about and learning this week. he had all the converts stand up in the devotional of probably close to 1500 missionaries and they made up close to like 10% probably. then he had the people who were baptized within the last 2 years stay standing and then share the short version of the moment they knew they wanted to be baptized, or what was the main factor in their conversion, etc. the point was that almost all of them had some sort of spiritual experience whether through prayer, or through reading the scriptures, being at the temple, or just being around mormon people, where they had the confirmation that they knew they wanted to and need to be baptized. it was a very solid devotional.
a fun fact for bekah, i woke up this morning singing "one week more" in my head- of course to the tune of one day more from les mis. not even a musical kinda guy but yeah.
blakes wisdom teeth videos are hillarious hahaha- such a good kid. aaaand its good to hear that everything went well with Elder Evans this weekend for stake conference it sounded like a huge success love you family! dont know what else to say other than things here are really good, im doing really good, and im super excited to take off to thailand! we got a picture of our new missino president coming this summer- its gonna be a good time. Love you all and hope you have the best week! oh and favorite quote this week was in some guys testimony- something about "when you hit rock bottom, don't get too down because Christ is the that rock at the bottom" and i dont know why it seemed so mind blowing to me but it made me think of the scripture i think D&C 122:8 how the son of man has descended below it all. Christ really is always there to pick us back up, no matter how far we feel like we've fallen or how many times we do, his arms are always outstreched- i feel pretty lucky to be sharing the dopest message there is- nothings as great as knowing you can be clean and free from guilt- but more importantly happy, filled with peace, and with your family forever. Love you fam keep it real!
Elder Chamberlin
P.S. on a lighter note, some new guy moved onto our floor and his companion had heard about the kilt that my companion currently owns (the strongest elder on the floor has rights of it), and so he waltzed into our room challenging dunnaway to the quilt, and ill be honest this guy looked huge and apparently was in the army haha, so of course i was backin my companion up givin him a little massage in preparation for an arm wrestle, pushup, then pull up competition, best of 3 and winner takes the kilt, and dunnaway just embarasses the guy in both arm wrestling and push ups, they didnt even end up doing pull ups hahah. i was pretty stoked bc my companion's success's are my success's, and if hes the strongest elder here, i pretty much am too so yeah no one messes with us. hahahaha

Week 7

hey everyone :)

always a good time to hear from everyone! I'm doing really well here its sad that the end of the MTC is in sight, but at the same time I am SOO excited to start serving and teaching real people!

So quick rundown of Elder Chamberlin's week:

Tuesday: normal day of learning thai and studying the gospel, and had a devotional speaker, Elder Perkins, who came and talked about how everyone can change, and he shared a lot of good missionary scriptures from Alma, about Alma and Amulek, and the sons of Mosiah. It was a solid devotional.

Wednesday-Saturday: Studying a lot of Thai (its so much fun and the language is just sweet) for example words like God (phra phuu pen caw) translates to holy person that is boss, or like conversion (kaan blian cay) which translates change of heart, repentance (klab cay) is return heart, etc. you get new perspectives on words and they bring on whole new meanings its pretty sweet. Our lessons with our investigators early this week were weak in the sense that they didnt really keep commitments and their desire to learn just wasnt there... fortunately this week a focus was on extending and following up on commitments, and we learned some good stuff. Our lesson with naan on friday was our best lesson with her yet (shes real but our teacher is role playing her investigator she had in thailand), and shes struggling with getting married bc shes living with her boyfriend and they want to get married but want to wait til she graduates, and long story short we learned there is no way to convince her with our words that she needs to get married, but she needs the spirit to testify to her that it is the right thing to do. So our last lesson with her we went in with not much of a gameplan other than having a couple scriptures about trusting in God, and how we can be blessed for keeping the commandments (Alma 38:5 and Mosiah 2:41 thanks bro greiner for getting me so prepared scripturally) and the spirit was definitely strong in our lesson. Naan (even tho she is role playing) and Elder Dunnaway and I could feel God's tremendous love for each of us, especially our investigator... which is really so weird because we were teaching our teacher, but God has his hands in all things, and when we hear truth, the spirit will always testify of it to us. We also got a new investigator this week which has been sweet bc its nice to start off our visits on a good foot because we have a bit more experience in teaching and in Thai, so thats been good too.

Sunday: Our two Lao speaking missionaries (going to San Diego and the other to San Francisco) our leaving this week it was sad hearing there parting words, but they gave great testimonies. Elder Reagan (ill try to attach a picture) is going to be very missed. He's the guy that knows every scene in star wars and battles in the hallway re-enacting the whole movie with Elder Davenport, hahahahaha, goofy guy but is gonna be a great missionary. Our district got the opportunity to meet megan at the temple which was pretty funny and super good to see her. The handshake was weird but its good to see my family and friends are still alive hahaha, after being here for what feels like... a very long time, the people i used to know seem like a dream haha so that was good. Then we had an amazing speaker come that night, he is the head guy over all the media in the Church (mormon.org, lds videos, etc) and he gave a really good talk. He gave us a sneak peek at what the new mormon.org is gonna be like this year, and there doing super super cool things to help missionaries be able to better utilize technology to spread the gospel "to every whole and creature" or something like that in Jeremiah 16:16 i think. He showed us some cool statistics on how the "He lives" easter video and "He is the Gift" christmas video affected missionary work. Because of the "He is the Gift" video which had i think over 30million unique views or something like, there was over 200,000 people who watched that who then requested to meet with missionaries- and over 100,000 of those people became investigators. And thats just what they were able to track- and they are starting on another video for this easter which the guy was SUPER stoked about and said he was getting emotional just thinking about it, so yeah get ready for that i guess. He said a lot of good stuff but yeah ill leave it there.

this week i've been hearing the phrase "The Lord qualifies those he calls" a lot and so ive been thinking about that a bit- and i think its cool how God works with imperfect people to accomplish his purposes, but how everyone, no matter where they are in life, play a role in helping someone else along their own journey. I dont know, its hard to explain, but it's always good to know that God's got yo back, becuase when you trust in Him you really can do anything.

P-day today has been great- i love doing my laundry and all my little clean up items, stay at home moms have it great- i love that accomplishing feeling of the warm sheets coming out of the dryer. Good lessons learned here at the MTC.

A package came from Scott and Sarah this week with a martinellis in it, which reminds me that New Years was this week hahahaha. We partyed all night. jk i went to bed at 1030 but we did pop open the martinellis and play a rousing game of uno before bed- needless to say it was a very fun night.

2 and a half weeks left in the mtc and a week and a half til i turn 19 which is wierd, im so old. but i wouldnt want to be anywhere else for this special time of year! getting to celebrate christs birth, my brith, and the earths birth, or whatever new years is for, has been a pretty cool experience.

well i love you, im doing good, and it sounds like everyone at home is doing good and everyone had a fun christmas and new years! love you all and as for calling home on the way to thailand, im not sure exactly how it works but i know i can buy like a card here at the mtc that lets me use the phones at the airport- but i think sis smith had some revolutionary idea about the whole thing so idk- ask her! love you!

Ps. i wanted to invite everyone to watch "i am the good shepherd, and other sheep i have" bible video on mormon.org.  :)

Week 6 -- The Week After Christmas -- December 29, 2014

whats up family and friends<3

Thanks to everyone for all the love and letters and packages it made this me feel not too far from home! It twas a very merry christmas!

This week was really good, especially Sunday for some reason was just amazing, but ill start from tuesday!

so tuesday i got megans fun little christmas package that had the Christmas video of the family in it (which scott accidentally already told me about haha sorry scott) but i put it in the computer and bc of all the restrictions on the computers here at the MTC i couldnt open it! so i was pretty upset about that, but then using all my wisdom and tricks i was able to figure out how to download the video to the computer (still couldn't open it) and then found a shortcut hotkey to open up the downloads, and then it miraculously worked. such a tender mercy<3 haha but really it was actually super cute and probably my favorite gift i loved seeing and hearing from you all!

so for Christmas eve we had a devotional which unfortunately i didnt write down who spoke or what it was about... haha... but i do remember my feelings and i felt good! so it was a good devotional! that night we watched a movie called "The Nativity" which was like a very real portrayal of Mary and Joseph as they were growing up and then all then there travels to Bethlehem and the actions of the wicked King Herod etc. and it was at first pretty wierd- i definitely didnt plan on seeing any births or circumsisions while i was on my mission but i was lucky enough to see both, so the movie was pretty wierd at times but overall it was actually super cool and eye opening to see all the struggles and persecution the Jews were going through and Mary and Joseph specifically what they had to deal with. anyways the movie made me even more grateful for everything the Christ did for us and how God has his hand in everything, even our trials. He loves us and he knows each of us, its so true!

Then Christmas Day! very highly anticipated and it was good, but i definitely was missing waking up with the family, the gift exchange, and all the fun traditions that we do each year for christmas. The MTC still took very good care of us though! We opened up all our presents under our fun little christmas tree in the morning (thank you everyone love you all<3 and my roomates all send their love and apprecation for you and say youre the best mom! i forgot to take a picture with all of us and our stockings, but i hope you still know and felel our love for you<3) I think the best part of christams was talking to the family, but it went so fast! 30 min felt like 5 haha and i guess we couldnt get to detailed in our discussion, but i did love hearing everyones voices! still cant remember the password dad, sorry ill keep thinkin. Second best part was having Elder Nelson one of our apostles come speak to us that night, and he talked about 9 of the doctrines of the gospel of jesus christ, from the godhead to prophets to tithing etc. one thing that really stuck out to me i thought was cool was he talked about how poverty is a generational cycle that is going to continue on forever unless somethign dramatic changes- and that change that will come is the blessings that come from tithing- so to not be shy or slow to mention tithing and the importance of it, even to places where money is such a big issue. Then that night we watched Ephraim's Rescue and it was super powerful, really solid choice. definitely a must see, and the ending was super powerful. It made me wonder if i would have enough faith to be able to trust the lord as much as Ephraim did in blessing and helping all those people in the Martin Handcart company. Along with that thought i watched "Joseph Smith- The Prophet of the Restoaration" movie and there were some similar experiences Joseph Smith had where he was able to give blessings to those who were sick or near death, and he was able to save them, but then his wife Emma said "Joseph how come you were able to help and save all those people and weren't able to save our child" right after their little child passed away- and joseph said something to the effect that "i can only do that which is God's Will" and i think thats super interesting and important to remember that we need to have faith in blessings and the power they have, but also faith and trust in God to know that he has a plan for every one of his children, and if this life was all there was that would seem pretty unfair, but its not, and God is a loving and just God, and so i guess just remember to trust in Him and His Will.

Friday was good and my classes were actually amazing. For some reason i had a super renewed desire to just learn thai 24/7 and so i made flashcards even though i hate flashcards and actually have been really enjoying using them wherever i am in my free time, and idk just been super pumped these last few days to learn and study hard. Saturday we taught some thai members in something called TRC which was a super success. it felt like it really was the first time i could communicate with them and teach without having to translate everything in my head, and it went super smooth, the spirit was strong.

But i think Sunday was the day that made the week SO GOOD and im not sure exactly why! Probably my favorite day in the MTC so far... Had a good priesthood meeting in the morning, and prepared a solid talk on faith for sacrament meeting which i didnt end up having to give which was nice, but i was actually kinda bummed about because it was so good haha (based off a little bit of Elder Hollands talk "Lord, I Believe" ) then had a nice temple walk in the snow which is fun but also has been making miss the beach, and then our devotional we got surprised with some guy name Richard Elliot (and at first im like alright whos this goofball) because David Archuleta was also there, and so needless to say all the Sisters and most of the Elders even were freaking out hahaha... So Richard Elliot started speaking and he is honestly one of the coolest most talented guys ever he is so legit! He plays organ for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, is a convert to the church, and just had such a powerful testimony of the power of Music. He talked about how he was in a rockband when he was a teenager and how the music he played then helped people forget about their problems for a short time, but how at an early age he realized the power of music that he played at his christian denomenational church, becuase the music wouldnt help people forget about their problems, but actually face them and deal with them. He played a bunch of arrangements for us from some of his christmas specials he played in the MOTAB to hymns that he just made sound amazing and his feet were straight up going insane underneath that organ haha they put a camera down there so we could see him playing with his feet and it was legit. Then David Archuleta spoke for a little and he was surprisingly pretty nervous it seemed like for being such a famous performer. He talked about how he got off his mission of March this year from Chile and how near the end of his mission the Church asked him if he would record the "Glorious" song at the end of Meet the Mormons. His story was pretty cool but i feel like takes to long to write about, but he sang that song which was even better live, and he sang a bunch of other songs that were super powerful but i think the best one was when Richard Elliot played the organ and David sang to "Come, Come, Ye Saints" and ahhh it was SO crazy powerful. Like im not much of a cryer but i almost felt like Shelley Smith it was so good. ah at the end when he sang the last verse and the end "oh how we'll make this chorus swell" and of course he spiced it up a little bit and it was just so good. heres the lyrics to the whole song anyway but definitely try to find a version of David Archuleta singing it online it was so good.

  1. 1. Come, come, ye Saints, no toil nor labor fear;
    But with joy wend your way.
    Though hard to you this journey may appear,
    Grace shall be as your day.
    'Tis better far for us to strive
    Our useless cares from us to drive;
    Do this, and joy your hearts will swell--
    All is well! All is well!
  2. 2. Why should we mourn or think our lot is hard?
    'Tis not so; all is right.
    Why should we think to earn a great reward
    If we now shun the fight?
    Gird up your loins; fresh courage take.
    Our God will never us forsake;
    And soon we'll have this tale to tell--
    All is well! All is well!
  3. 3. We'll find the place which God for us prepared,
    Far away in the West,
    Where none shall come to hurt or make afraid;
    There the Saints will be blessed.
    We'll make the air with music ring,
    Shout praises to our God and King;
    Above the rest these words we'll tell--
    All is well! All is well!
  4. 4. And should we die before our journey's through,
    Happy day! All is well!
    We then are free from toil and sorrow, too;
    With the just we shall dwell!
    But if our lives are spared again
    To see the Saints their rest obtain,
    Oh, how we'll make this chorus swell--
    All is well! All is well!

Then on our way back to the residence there was this dope icey slide on the walkway right by the entrance to our residence so we had a good time sliding around on that, hopefully i didnt ruin my suit, but fortunately i wont really need it in thailand.

anyways i cant believe im off to thailand in 3 weeks now. its been a pretty crazy experience here but ive loved every minute of it! so stoked to meet president senior and to get to teach real people and help real people. Such an exciting work. sorry this letter is so long!- I know God lives and loves us, and that without his grace and mercy of sending his Son to atone for our sins we wouldnt be able to live with him again! Joseph Smith a prophet of God and i just wish everyone could know the truth of that! Life is so good! all hard things have an end and all of our joys and the things that bring us happiness, we can have for eternity! love you all have a great week! Happy new Years! 2015 yiewww!
